This is a typical winter plumaged, adult Pacific Loon, one of at least three that have been present during this season. Pace is probably the best place in the mid-south for this species. I rarely go there without seeing at least one during the October through March season. Note it is generally darker than the other loons but the most striking feature to me is the beautiful smooth curve from the bill over the crown, down the nape and neck. What I call the cobra headed look. The small stiletto shaped bill is held level with the water, chin strap and the straight line demarcation of the white and black on the side of the neck makes this bird elegantly distinctive.
