ECDO-MODO - fence.jpg

I have a few photos of this bird showing that it has the normal collar as seen on ECDO. The collar and the dark brown coloration of the primaries can be seen in this shot and the body color and tone is more typical of MODO. There even seems to be a pink flush as sometimes seen on MODO.

At least in this photo (if color is accurate )the hybrid would appear to be more from our extinct friend (Passenger Pigeon ) The coloring of the feet is not clear but appears to be reddish (?).

I saw such a dove this size in the late ninties in some hemlock pines next to my home that are heavily frequented and nested by MODO's. I was less than 40 feet in cloudy noon light. The breast was markedly more coppery red. Overall the back and head colors were darker and the tail was pointed like a typical MODO. I saw it once again a few days later perched on my roof but never was able to get a photo.

Sometime later I wrote to Garrie Landry at his Passenger Pigeon website and he thought I might have been mistaken and seen a EUCD . I have never seen a EUCD in my area of Pennsylvania.

I reasoned I saw an oversized MODO, but I have been searching the web ever since for a similar sighting with photos as well as my hemlocks and the high wires. No luck.

Doves in general seem to be black holes for light and always seem to be in shadow when you want a photo. I hope your other photos give you better color definition. In any event the pics are fascinating.

This discovery of yours in fascinating, Jeff. I never woulda thunk that those two genera were close enough for hybridization. But your pictures certainly do seem to indicate that they are.

Concerning that business you related about an EUCD landing on the back of a MODO: at that point, the two birds were just one step from copulation. All it would require is a little cooperation from the MODO.
