Petersen Museum -- "Automotivated: Streamlined Fashion and Automobiles," August 2010

There was much to see during my return to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles in August 2010. I ended up spending two consecutive afternoons there. This gallery is the first of five on my 2010 visits. It features the exhibition "Automotivated: Streamlined Fashion and Automobiles," produced in partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum, and on display July 24, 2010, through Jan. 23, 2011.

"Streamlined silhouettes in fashion evolved with and complemented the new, more slippery shapes of automobiles of the 1930s," the show's introduction says. "As more aerodynamically efficient closed cars became a regular part of daily life, the pioneering open-air machines that necessitated the use of protective motoring gear quickly became things of the past. This development made it feasible for motorists to wear clothes suited for their destination rather than for their journey."

The cars shown are from the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Collection. Most of the non-automotive objects are from the collection of the Phoenix Art Museum. For more information about the exhibit, click on this link: http://www.petersen.org .
