The White Cat

Aqcha, Northern Afghanistan

Aq Pisak was a well known dambura player in Aqcha. Aq Pisak (centre) means 'white cat' in Turkic. To his right is the drummer, holding a zerbaghgali, and to his left is a ghichek player (a fiddle made basically from a turned wooden stick with tuning pegs and a tin can for a body). On his far right is the singer and on his far left is a chai walla (tea boy).

This is a really beautiful, timeless picture. I passed through Afghanistan in 1974 but I imagine that, as a Muslim, you were much closer to the Afghans than we other foreigners.
