Kevin Scott At Joe Morovits' Cabin
(MorovitsCabin062006-_23adj.jpg)

We searched in heavy brush along Morovits Creek to find this relic,
the homestead cabin of Joe Morovits, the Hermit of Baker Lake.
Built in the 1890s, it is now in a state of advanced decay, falling slowly
into the wild ground on which it sits.

For a circa 1981 view, see: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/skagit-wsr/recreation/
Based on this image, we think our photograph shows Kevin at the cabin's back door.

Joe was my Grandmother's brother. We have a little info about him, but am interested in anything you've got. Rosemary

Joe was my great-great uncle. In January, 1963, Sports Illustrated featured an article on Joe titled "Might Joe Morovits: Real-Life Bunyan". In 1957 the Seattle Times Newspaper also featured an article about him. He was the pioneer of mountaineering in the Mt. Baker region. He lived 27 years in the region as a jolly hermit of Baker Lake. He moved to the area in1891.
