ASIAN HORNET - VESPA VELUTINA - FRELON ASIATIQUE

Vespa velutina is a Hymenoptera coming from Asia. The subspecies Vespa velutina nigrithorax has been introduced in France, and it is now very present in south-western France where it destroys the bee’s colonies, its main food resource. I took these pictures in my garden in September 2008, in south-west France. I see this species for the first time here. I saw two insects, close to some Vespa crabo. It is very beautiful, but dangerous for the bees. It “flycatches” at the swarm entrance, waiting for the bees, and catches them when they fly away.
