Furnace was built in 1785 by Eli Budd. It was the first iron furnace in Cumberland County using local materials for smelting and forging of iron, namely bog ore, oyster shell lime and charcoal. The furnace produced pig and bar iron, fire backs for fireplaces, stove parts, etc. The forge also made farm tools, nails and iron forgings for local shipyards.
