Sand Myrtle (Leiophyllum (Kalmia) buxifolium)

A characteristic Pine Barrens plant and one of my favorites. This species is found in three disjunct locations in the United States: the New Jersey Pine Barrens, the Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina, and the southeastern Blue Ridge Province. Some debate exists whether these are different species and if so, it would make this a Pine Barrens endemic. Lovely little evergreen leaves, pinkish buds and lovely white flowers.
