I use the Canon 1.4x with the 70-200 2.8 IS a lot and also find the quality loss minimal. Uising just the cheap Tamron 1.4x isn't too bad either. Stacking the two is the problem. Maybe I should try a better non-Canon 1.4x in the future, like the Kenko 300 Pro you suggested.

I think the main factor in the quality of you T/C set is the limitations of the extender. The Kenko 300 Pro is by far better, and I highly recommend it. I have both, and I use the "el cheapo" only with the 400 f/5.6 prime, in order to keep the AF. The 70-200L with the Kenko 1.4X has almost no quality reduction.
