BACKLIT JAPANESE MAPLE - ISO 100

Sunlight shines through the leaves of our Japanese Maple tree, against a "Carolina Blue" sky. ISO 100. 35mm equivalent focal length of 60mm. "Standard Color" film mode. Aperture priority. I actually had to decrease saturation in post-processing. The red leaves were so bright, it hurt my eyes.

I'm not much of a tree person. I just know it's some kind of Japanese Maple. In the fall, the leaves turn a dark purple color. When the sun passes through the leaves, they look bright red. In this image, you can see the purple color on a couple of leaves that are turned sideways to the light.

Nice shot. What kind Japanese maple is this? Do the leaves always look this red or they
become so red in fall?
