Canon G10 Underwater Test - Byron Bay

After finally upgrading to a much better camera and underwater housing, I went to Byron Bay for the Australia Day weekend and tested out my new Canon G10 and WP-DC28 Canon housing by diving Julian Rocks. This test only utilised the camera's built-in flash. Light levels were moderate to low at times which was a challenge for the focussing system. I shot mainly in Program mode as I hadn't yet worked out how to change aperture/shutterspeed settings without the use of the Control-wheel. I have since received a new YS-110a Sea&Sea strobe and strobe arm set which has a target light and a guide number of 20, which will markedly improve the experience....at least I hope so.

there is a trick to change aperture and speed without the wheel ! Use the "shift" button (left side) and the left and right ones of the 'pad'. It works

Hi Byron ! I have the same probolem with my canon g10 Did You discovered how to change aperture/shutterspeed settings without the use of the Control-wheel? There is any trick? Thank You for help.

On the Sea & Sea YS110 alpha flash there is an LED spotlight that helps brighten up the area you want to focus on, thereby making it easier for the camera to focus on the subject when in low light it would have trouble. Also, it you want to make sure you get the subject in focus, put the camera in focus check mode so you can see the focus area being sharp before you take the shot....I actually don't use this anymore as I found it distracting. Alternatively, try using a smaller focus area. I hope that clears it up for you as to what I meant.

You mentioned that your initial photos were shot without an external flash so that the G10's focusing powers were challenged. Now that you're using an external, are you still noticing focus lag? I shoot the G10 in the Canon housing with an Inon S2000, and have noticed that the auto focus works very slowly, often refusing to lock when shooting on the zoom (a small creature nested deep in coral, for example). I'm wondering if I am doing something incorrectly. What settings are you using now? Thanks!

The G10 does have a macro mode and it is very useful but not good with the dinky little flash as the lens shades it if you are too close. Not sure what you mean by a digital macro mode though if that is something different?

P.S. The most you will find will happen is that a housing will leak rather than implode I would imagine. Some expensive housings may have leak detectors that warn you before serious damage is experienced. In the case of the WP-DC28, you would probably see it happen before your eyes as the whole casing is clear. The camera does not have any environmental guard to resist water entry, I understand.

Hi Matty. The WP-DC28 made by Canon that I have is rated/tested only to 40 metres (131feet) so they don't guarantee it below that but it may withstand that extra 19 feet, at your own risk of course. If you want a housing that will go there, there are other third party brands rated to 60 metres (197feet) such as this one: http://reefphoto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3466 and the Ikelite: http://www.ikelite.com/web_two/can_g10.html But both are much more expensive.

we sometimes dive deep to avoid currents. would the housing survive a 150ft dive? would it implode?

Yes I have, although it doesn't shoot in HD. The picture isn't bad if you don't mind the lower quality.

Very nice! Ive been wondering how the G10 would perform underwater. Now I cant wait to get the underwater case. Thanks for testing it out....
