We have tiny, really tiny, blue colored birds. Not Indigo Buntings, much smaller. Their not baby Blue Birds either. Seem to be solid Blue, almost Turquoise.

Generally, Eastern Bluebirds are noticeably smaller than Cardinals....could it have been a Jay of some species, like the Scrub Jay?

we live in the houston area, and saw a bird that looks exactly like an eastern bluebird, which we have all the time, but was the size of a cardinal. do bluebirds get that big?

Ray... I’m not familiar with any bird that might fit that description....however, it is possible that it was a member of the Bunting family with a pigment aberration in the feathers of the head. I’ve seen Juncos with white heads and normal coloration over the rest of the body, so I suppose it could happen with a Bunting.

I also saw a turquoise bird that looks nothing like the pictures of the indigo bunting. Deep shade of turquoise and no other markings va little larger than a finch. I've seen indigo buntings and this wasn't like the ones I've seen.

I saw my first indigo bunting today. It looked like a solid blue finch..beautiful blue in color. He was eating from our feeder in the back yard.It appears that it is little further south here in Hoover , Al. than its usual habitat .

RAD...Their color has a lot to do with reflected light...not many other birds, that I can think of in your area of the U.S., that might be colored similarly.

I saw a bird the size of a finch. In fact, it looked like a house finch, except where the house finch feathers are red, this one had blue feathers. so we're talking blue head feathers blending down into the back a little , a white breast, and brown/black/gray, wings and tail. Help! its driving me crazy trying to figure out what it is.

I saw what I could swear to be a turquoise blue bird at one of my feeders yesterday but can't find it in my bird book. We are in north georgia. It was a gorgeous blue all over and a little darker on his head and beak, a little bigger than a gold finch. Any ideas?

I am having trouble identifying a bird...and have looked at all kinds of pictures...it isn't any of these....the size of a finch...it looked like a finch, BUT with black small beak...,black wings...no white in the wings, and the color was a deep dark blue...anyone know what it is ???

I saw my first Indigo Bunting about two weeks ago, I had walked out my backdoor and there it was on the top of my shepherd's hook below was the feeder...it flew off right away into the oak trees. I was shocked and didn't know what it was until I started searching. I live in Iowa, La. I also saw an albino hummingbird about 4 years ago and was able to take a few pics of it. Thanks for the pics of all blue birds...now I know what it was!!! No doubt!

This morning in Shacklefords, Virginia I was sitting drinking my coffee watching my hummingbirds feed when I saw my first Indigo Bunting. It landed by the feeder and took me by surprise I had never seen such a brilliant beautiful blue before. I hope it returns so maybe I can get pictures of it.

This morning at 11:30 AM I saw my first Indigo Bunting. I am 64 and thought I was seeing things, as my bird feeder lid is the same color. On February 10th I took a very bad fall, been homebound and most of the time in a wheelchair! It was such a blessing to see this beautiful bird only GOD could have created! I saw a bird I have not seen here before. We have lots of indigo buntings but this bird was longer and more sleek in appearance. It was in my bottle brush going from flower to flower. This bird does not come to the feeder or eat off the ground, only eats out of the flower. It is the most brilliant blue I have ever seen. Any suggestions?? North central Louisiana

Saw our first Indigo buntings today. We have never seen them before except on TV. There were 4 males and I think 2 females. They have been at the bird feeder all day during the rain. Other birds have chased them off, but they keep coming back. Hope they decide to stay and raise a family.

I saw my very first Indigo Bunting today 5/8/12. I thought my eyes were deceiving me when it flew together with a yellow finch and landed in a purple leaf plum tree directly next to my house. That 5 minutes of viewing was the most colorful and exciting experience I have every witnessed since I've been birding for over 30 years! I hope to see the Indigo bunting again and plan on putting out a finch feeder to try to attract them. Thanks for your beautiful photos that helped me identify.

I love birds and all GOD's wonderful creation -- I see "art". I live in Winston-Salem, NC and see cardinals, yellow-bellied sapsuckers & woodpeckers, blue jays (very nautical I might add), various little chickadees, many blackbirds and crows (crafty creatures), and of course lots of brown birds. But, last year on my birthday, Oct. 7th, I went to my kitchen for my morning tea, then looked out the kitchen window at the birds, when suddenly a trio of blue birds flew up to my window and hovered vertically, just flapping their wings to suspend them in my view!! I was soooo happy! I have not seen them since, nor do I usually see all-blue birds. Your sight is the first I've found to maybe identify them as indigo buntings. Thank you! Karyne in NC.

The beautiful indigo bunting is back at the feeder!! He has not been singing from the treetops - he had made himself scarce for the last two-three-four days. Perhaps he is secure in his territory? The weather has cooled slightly - maybe he does not like the heat! Thank goodness he's back - I thought a hawk had gotten him. :-(

We've had an indigo bunting hanging around for about 4 weeks now. He would occasionally visit the feeder, but spent most of his days high in the tree tops singing away - every day from dawn til dark. The past few days, tho, I haven't seen nor heard from him. What could have happened? Do you think he may have nestlings to care for? It's been hot yesterday and today, could that be the reason? I miss seeing him! We're in Southeastern Wisconsin.

I just saw an indigo bunting on my niger thistle feeder in south-central New Mexico. Deep, almost turquoise blue throughout--no other color except darker blue, almost black, across the face and and wings--makes me sure of this id. This is the first time I have seen this bird in my back yard.

Last year I seen many indigo bluebirds and they are so pretty,so far this year I have not seen any,also last summer I saw down by our pool drinking a beautiful ornge and black bird,never seen that before,I live in central wisconsin and hope our late spring didn't put a halt from these birds coming back.

I live in central Texas and have a number of blue bird houses at my place. I found that two of my houses had five babies each. I began to watch the houses and have not seen any feeding going on. I do not see any birds entering the houses. After about a week I looked in again and one bird was alive in each house and the rest were dead. What is the deal? There were no birds around when I looked. How can these birds survive if no mothers are feeding them? Thanks. Need an answer.

I saw my first site of a Indigo bunting in my Bird & Blooms Mag Aug 11 2010. That same week Aug 13 2010 an a bike ride on a bike trial in Northern Ohio, I spotted my first real live Indigo I was so excited I'm 59 years old and have never seen one befor this. It's a great joy to see nature at its best. Im so sorry to see other things disapering befor my very eyes.

I was in Southern California near San Clemente yesterday around noon time. I saw a small to medium sized bird smaller than a pigeon yet larger than a sparrow there. In fact there were many of them. They were a dark, dark blue, almost black with bright dark orange feathers near where there arm pit would be. It was much more able to be seen when they opened their wings to fly. I have a tiny dark blue bird coming to my fench feeder he is thin shaped all blue. This is the first one I have ever seen thought maybe someone could tell me what it was I live in Kentucky the bird has no white on it or brown just dark blue maybe 4 to 4 1/2 inches long he is so beautiful I will try to get a picture of him but it is hard to get that close. thought he might be on here.

I have seen two blue colored birds that resemble the blue grosbeak. One still had brown feathers mixed with the blue on his head, shoulders, and back (as seen with binoculars) that I thought had the grosbeak type bill. The other was almost certainly a indigo bunting, as he had the lighter colored lower beak, but they are both the smaller size of the I.B. I am very new at birding. For the last week we have seen a pair of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, but have not seen them since last night. I live in middle TN about 20 miles north of Nashville. I don't have any photos to share so I know it is hard to try to identify them. So, could the first one have been a Blue Grosbeak in my area?? I know the Indigos are in this area but have not seen one before today.

The photos are great and from looking at the last two, I think I briefly saw an Indigo Bunting. It was a small, finch-like, Aqua bird. Your last two photos appear more Aqua than Indigo. Never saw him before, or since. I think it is very rare sighting for this part of the country,Vidalia,GA...What's up? Migration?

LO...an Indigo Bunting west of the Rockies would be a rare sighting...could it possibly have been a Mountain Bluebird that you saw? They are a very beautiful blue color, as well.

I saw a brillant blue bird today that looks like the blue bunting, but I live in Northern Ca. Could this be true??

i was in the forest in northern michigan , (iron river), trout fishing and saw a dark blue bird the size of this bunting, it was beautiful, i have no idea what it was but suppose it might have been this bunting, i thought maybe it was a king fisher of some sort since the coloring was a bit darker. what was my mystery bird?

I just saw a indigo bunting and several male Baltimore orioles for the first time ever !!! They are beautiful! The orioles were bathing in my bird bath and one indigo bunting came along and the orioles would chase it away but it would come back when some of the orioles would leave.I'm in kenefick tx.

mystery bird???im in baton rouge, la and saw a bird that resembles the bunting. yet, the bird was more flourescent in its color. i took some photos with my blackberry but cant get anyone to identify the birds!!!!!

I live in Nashville Tennessee, and just put out my first finch feeder. Every morning without fail and every evening, two Blue Indigo Buntings come to feed and spend about 15 minutes per visit. Is this a normal happening in middle Tennessee?

Hello. I saw Missouri's state bird,the Eastern Bluebird, for the first time in Branson, Mo. in early May. This week May 20th, I saw the Indigo Bunting for the first time too. I am so excited. I wish I could get wonderful bird photos as the ones on this page.

Several of our family have seen this blue bird at our feeders and now I believe it is aIndigo bunting or a escapped bird someone got as Pet. I've had lots of finchs, but never had a blue finch.
I wish I could get some good pictures of him. He is beautiful. I live in central Arkansas

There's blue bird missing. the Blue Bunting: Small, stocky bunting with stout, black bill. Male is deep blue overall with black face and upper breast. Forages on ground, in thickets and in brushy understory for seeds, insects and larvae. Short flight, alternates rapid wing beats with wings pulled briefly to sides. It's usually seen in TExas and Mexico. I've seen it twice in Minneapolis near wooded areas. One has visited our finch feeders this week. This bird is often captured and bred for "pets" so the ones I've seen may be escapees. God bless this beautiful creature and grant it a long successful flight back home!

I believe I saw an indigo bunting in Bloomsdale, Missouri. I didn't get a picture but I will have my camera handy each time I'm out so I can capture the pretty bird.

I, too, just saw my first indigo bunting. I'm in south central wisconsin. What's up with so many people seeing them for the first time? Migrating? Habitat shifting?

Thanks for the pictures of the Indigo Bunting. I saw a male 5-15-2009 in Rockford, Illinois. This was the first time I have seen one. The local feed store told me what it might be. Your picture confirmed it.

First time was last week at my house for this siting; I thought a gold finch & blue bird had "a date": his fly pattern is very close to that of the gold finches....now from this site I know it's a blue bunting. Beautiful to see in the blooming cherry tree & at my feeder.

We need help identifying a bird in northeastern illinois. It may be a young male indigo bunting but I am not sure. This bird was solid (but not bright) blue from his head to 2/3 of the way down the back and the same color on the breast back to about the legs. The rear back of the bird was brown with white streaks. The belly from the legs to the tail was white or very light tan. The bill appeared to be small [like a pine siskin]. The size was 4" to 4.5". I would describe the bird as looning like a blue male purple finch. Is this an indigo bunting or ????. We did see a "regular" solid blue indigo bunting at our feeder one year ago today. Thank you for any help.

My husband and I couldn't identify the beautiful blue bird that suddenly appeared in our bird feeder along with our cardinals. I got on line and found your page, thank you for your beautiful pictures of all birds. A wonderful way to start our morning to watch the indigo buntings.

I just saw a bright aqua blue bird on the ground below a feeder. It's about the size of a chickadee and stays feeding on the ground. He's all by himself and flies off when a squirrel scoots him away but flies right back. It could be a bunting...but the color in the sunlight is a beautiful bright aqua color. I live in southern Maine! It's warm here for the first time in several months. I sure hope he stays for the season! 4/24/09

My husband and I have just seen our first indigo bunting! We live in NE Mississippi. He is a beautiful bird! We've never seen them here before now. Hopefully we will see him again at our feeder! Your photos were a big help in identifying him! Thanks..

I've also seen an irredescent blue bird, at my feeder. It's not as large as an indigo bunting, appeared to be a ground feeder. The sighting was on July 3rd, 2008, mid-morning. Haven't seen it since. It's about the size of a purple finch, maybe a little smaller. Quite striking. Anyone know what it is??

I've been seeing a bright, iredescent blue bird lately around my home in rural central North Carolina, but he's not quite the same as the Indigo Bunting. His color is extremely bright, almost shimmers like metal, but only on his back. I've only caught fleeting glimpses of him but I don't get the impression that he is all blue.

Saw the little indigo bunting at my bird feeder the last couple of days in north central Nebraska. I had never seen one before. They are a beautiful bird!!

I saw this bright iridescent blue bird at my bird bath, and ever since I have been wondering what species it was, thanks to these pictures, I now know it was an Indigo Bunting. I live in NE Illinois, and it is the first time I saw one, so I am guessing it is on migratory path. Thank you for the wonderful pictures.

This is Woodstock, NY and I have seen at my feeder several times in the past 2 weeks a small sparrow size or slightly smaller, bright blue bird whose back and tail feathers were a confluent iridescent green blending into bright all over blue in bright sunshine. The lower dorsal feathers appear black without sunshine. I presume that this is an indigo bunting but have seen no photos with the green color. Can anyone confirm?

I live in West TN and we have several of these at our feeders every day. I had a feeder sitting on my deck and this seemed to be the one they preferred. However the squirrels preferred it too. They are stunning birds and such a pleasure to watch. I hope they return every year. These pictures are beautiful. I have some I have taken but they aren't this good. Thanks!!

I just saw one of these Indigo Bunting birds for the very first time. I live in Northern Michigan. It was solid blue with a lighter shade on the tail feathers.

We have seen this bird 4 times today at our feeder, that is, the Indigo Bunting. We live in Central Arkansas. We also have a Plum Breasted Grosbeak today. These birds must be migratory for our area as we only see them at this time of year (early May).

Hi , i have also seen a blue bird at my feeder . He has to be the inigo bunting bird , he is blue all over like the photos of the ingio bird. of course i am not for sure . He is all blue in color with maybe a little bid of dark blue or black on his tail. I live in Carrollton Ga. just out side of Atlanta . apri 13th 2008

I have seen a blue bird at my feeder. i thought at first that it was an indigo bunting, but this little guy is thinner than the pix i have seen. i cant remember if he had the same kind of beak as the bunting. next time he comes to my feeder i'll try to remember to check. he's been to my feeder twice. i live in north central arkansas. does anybody know what kind of bird this is? thanks for listening, jay

We have seen the indigo bunting or blue bird down at our river bottom farm land, but until this year, have never seen it at our home feeder, up on the "prairie". He eats at my finch feeder, hanging upside down at times. Thanks for the clear pictures.

the indigo male is very beautiful. I have had my flowers and bird feeders for 12 years and i have never seen one until the other day when went to the eagles and we seen this blue bird. I came home and tried looking for it online finally i found a web site that someone repiied back and told me what it was. I got online and found your site. I love the pic's
