hi janis, i write from italy. i own a countryhouse and every summer i have to deal with these undesired guests. i think it's strange that they fly only at night, usually they spend the day flying around in search of food and materials for their nest; what make them apparent at night is that they are attracted by light sources.
they have a quite characteristic buzz, low pitched and noisy. you hear them distinctly when they are flying near you, so pay attention and try to locate some of them during the day. if possible, follow them and find their nest, it should be near your home. beware, it can be anywhere: in a tree, in an old cracked wall, under a bunch of dead leaves, and it can be quite big.
once you manage to find the nest, the better way to kill them is to use a specific poison. i think it's called "pomes" or something like that, and it's produced by bayer, but i am not sure as, at least in italy, you cannot buy it if you don't own a special authorisation by the police.
a spoon of poison is enough to destroy a big nest, it should be poured inside or on its entrance, so thet the insects get dirty and bring it inside.
don't go near the nest whild pouring the poison! you can put some poison into a small packet made with that aluminium sheet for foods, tie it to a long rod and break the packet into the entrance by moving the rod, then go away. in some hours they'll be gone.

I live in NC,We have been having a problem with Giant hornets since the middle of summer.They seem to have come out of nowhere.Thw weird thing is they only come out at nite if we have our outside lights on and boy are they big.We took pics of some dead ones to show our county extension officer,but they couldn't help us,just identify them.I'm scared to go out at nite or turn lights on.We don't know where the nest is to kill them all.Boys don't come out at nite and they are not attracted to lights,so this is like a horror movie.Any advice will be welcome.I hope they don't come back next year,even with the weather turning colder,they're still here.Thank you..Janis
