i live in georgia, usa. i've seen four different dragonflies in our yard but they were all different from any of the pictures i've seen. one of them had wings that looked like squares, it reminded me of the sails on some ships - it was beautiful. has anyone seen one similar to this?

Out of all these dragonflies shown, there is not one, like the one I saw. It was fairly large, and all black. The eyes were quite different- they were square, or rectangular,and looked like a tiny, blue, tv screen. I am in the U.S.A. The dragonfly winked at me - I asked him, to wink again, and he did! That was on July 16th, 2010. I am looking forward to summer weather, hoping I can see one like that, again. Has anyone else, ever seen one, like that?

We have had dragonflies around the house all summer but this evening around 6pm we noticed several flying around the backyard. When we stepped onto the deck we saw a swarm of them flitting around above us and all around the yard. It was beautiful. We do not live directly close to any water! Is this usual? W

Most impressive collage of pics-excellent photography-interesting species noted and logged. Looked for one particular that was similar to the beautiful onxy-black ones, but a body of one shown to my lady and me had what appeared to be similar to saddlebage immediately behind the back wings and a little lower on either side of it's abdomen. Have never came across anything such as this and am indeed curious.

Recently my boyfriend and I saw two beautiful dragonflies with a white iridescent colored body and flag like wings. The amazing thing is that they actually allowed us to get very close to look at them. They seemed almost "social" in nature. Anyone ever seen this kind of dragonfly??

I recently have seen a couple of dragonflies around my house and they looked really cool to take some pictures of them. A couple of weeks ago I seen them in some flowers around the house and seen them again. I not sure they are the same ones, but they started following me around the house and now I don't matter what I'm doing even cutting grass they will land on me as it seems to be fun for them. This morning I was just sitting on the front porch and one of them was flying around and I stuck my my hand out and it landed on me. I was wondering if anybody can tell me if this is unusual?

i have a dragonfly that will land on my finger all i have to do is hold it up in the air when it is flying by! also it will sta for at least 35 min. it takes time for them to get used to you but anyone can do it

There was a beautiful large dragonfly at our pool browny red but had a yellow fluffy part round its middle like a tutu. Unfortunately it was dead in the pool the next day . I shall keep looking for another one like it.

Iwas sitting in my garden and heard a funny sound like a small helicopterI looked behind me and saw this huge fly about 2 -3 ins long and its wings about the same size it was black with clear wings as I have never saw this before I wandered what it was Irene from Leven in fife

I recently moved to a place where my back door is very close to water's edge. The colors are fantastic and so are their personalities. Last summer at the river, I had dragonflies landing on my leg and I believe they were mating. One would hover above the other and had this curvy stem connecting them. I'm trying to find a photo of them positioned that way so I can get a tattoo of it. If I can't find it, I see some other nice choices in your pictures. I never realized there were so many different types.

Very nice gallery. I like dragonflies, too. The hardest thing for me is IDing them. So many varities! I was thrilled when I got pictures of dot-tailed whitefaces mating and I could clearly see the eggs on the female.

do you do anything to attract them to a particular place? Great photo's looking to get different angles etc myself and finding it's very hit and miss and have not yet really got up there face to face as you have in mnay of your shots.

i seen some type of dagonfly. it was brown in color except for the abdomine was white. the wings were brown as well except they were weird in shape. the best description i can give is they were squared on the ends ( like racing flags). if you may know what kind of dagonfly this could be please send me a picture that i can confirm it with. if not let me know if i might have seen something rare. i'm located in chatsworth, GA.

I took photos of a dragonfly that had the usual 4 clear wings and then 4 smaller opaque brown, rather heart-shaped, wings behind. I've never seen anything like this. I was hoping it was dead, it was so still, so I could save it, but it eventually flew away. It was on a chrysanthemum bush. Has anyone seen one like this?

Beautiful site you have here! I found a very unusual insect in my house last night that resembled a dragonfly. It was amber/brown in color about three inches long, but the most striking & interesting part of it was what appeared to me to be a 3-4 inch long "stinger" attached to the end of its body.

I saw huge dragonfly yesterday which had a coal black body and long, wide wings of coal black except for a large azure blue spot on each wing tip. In addition, there were 3 or 4 long 'hairs" protruding from each wing end margin. Do you know what it is called/ Do you have a photo? Thanks for your lovely work.

Mary and William Bradford We are ages five and four. We were in our Grandparents garden when we saw a three inch dragon fly. It has a bronze long body and four wings. It kept coming back so we named it Bobby. We had close looks at it using a magnify glass. We checked out a Bug Bingo game and your website to make sure it was a dragon fly..Mary is studying insects in School, Kindergarten.

I am amazed at how detailed these pics are they are beautiful. I have been facinated by dragon flies for years now. I have wonderful memories of them during my many summers both child and adult hood. My fondest being we can sit by the pool and if you sit real still with your feet proped up they will land on your toe. I tried taking pics of that day but......I don't have a camera with as high resolution as yours. Thankyu for posting them where people can see their amazing beauty in full detail

Great shots! I particularly like your dragonfly pics. Last month (July 2005) I bought a macro lens and I have been shooting some dragonfly macros lately. I have made some good progress for me but I cannot even imagine how you get such clarity and definition in your shots. You have one dragonfly shot that particularly stands out, the beautiful red one that you use in your discussion of macros. I think one of the keys to that kind of pic must be the light source. It looks like you are using a large reflector or softbox for that one. Could you give me some tips on how you go about lighting nature shots like this. It seems to me a large reflector would be difficult to handle in a situation where you are trying to "sneak" up on a bug in the first place. I have noticed it greatly helps to just search until you find a dragonfly that is willing to pose for you. Some are very much more friendly than others. The other day I even found one that would not fly away even when I rubbed his/her wing with my finger. Most of them scatter when you show up in the field. Again, great shots! Thanks for posting them. I am utterly amazed at what you are able to do. All your photos are beautiful, but these dragonfly shots are almost surreal. Like you, I am a teacher (Social Studies) but as a side hobby, I have been interested in macro photography for the last year and have decided to try and learn all I can. I'm waiting for my new Canon 20D to arrive in the mail as I write this. i stumbled upon your site of macro insect photos and discovered the dragon gallery, in a word - AWESOME! i had an experience on Mt. Shasta with a blue-green dragon that was so powerful i decided to drop my GIVEN name and CHOOSE my name from this wild experience... dragons are the connection between the fairy kingdom and the human kingdom... when you get this close to them they begin to have personalities, some appear to be posing and even grinning or smiling for the camera... thank you so much for taking us into their world...
