This image consists of two layers and a mask. The lower layer was made by
converting the original image to black and white, then inverting it to make
a negative. The upper layer was also con-verted to B/W but then subjected
to a recoloring process in which the black/white spectrum was replaced by
black > red > yellow > white. Then a swatch made with a REAL paintbrush on an
ordinary piece of paper was scanned and used as a mask to let only part of
the colored image show through, hiding the rest. We added a slight drop
shadow and embossing effect to the colored swatch to dramatize it.
