After living several years in eastern Washington, I worked 5 months at Malheur Field Station, and came to know, love, and admire the wide and open terrain of southeastern Oregon. A few years later, I began to visit a sanctuary retreat southwest of Hood River, near the northern border. For a couple of decades, I drove through eastern Oregon on Hwy. 395 to California. Then I moved to Colorado and became a park host volunteer, and one of those stints was on the coast at Cape Perpetua.
