Eucalyptus

St. Helena, California

Of over 520 kinds of Eucalyptus, several were brought to California in the 1930's and planted in groves; the hope was that they would produce firewood or construction material. The wood is brittle, prone to warping, and resinous, burning hot and dirty. The trees are messy--"always dropping something"--flower parts, leaves, fruits, bark, branches. Now, they are infested with lerp psyllids, tiny insects that build sugar hideaways for themselves on the leaves. But still...having grown up among them, I love them.
