I did a lot of 'work' on this to turn it into a more painterly image…
• First, I ran it through Photoshop with NeatImage to get rid of any digital noise, then I saved three different 'exposures' as TIFF files…
• I then combined the three 'exposures' in Photomatix Pro to give a more balanced overall exposure…
• Next, I took it back into Photoshop and cloned out a lamp post and two T.V. aeriels, darkened the sky a little, and levelled the overall image…
• Then I used the shadow/highlight tool to lighten the deep shadows and the curves palette to slightly darken the whites, before boosting the overall contrast levels…
• Next, I duplicated the layer and applied a 'glowing edge' filter (with values of 20, 1, & 7), to the top layer, sharpening the edges with an 'unsharp mask' action of 100% at .7 of a pixel…
• Then I used a 'soft light' blend mode to allow the colour and detail to show through, before merging the layers.
• After that, I dodged and burned a bit to bring out some of the key features of the photo and enhance the detail…
• And finally, before cropping to a letterbox format, I applied a light canvas texture to finish the painterly effect!
I hope you like it. I shall probably have it properly printed at around 30 inches wide, then frame it and hang it on my wall!!
