Said to be the largest free standing Granite rock in the world ! After years of campers and camp fires heating and cooling , a huge piece of the rock split and fell off .
Giant Rock's most interesting bit of history took place in the 1940's when a German miner by the name of Frank Critzer made himself a cozy home under the rock.
He dug out two large rooms each having a seperate entrance and with a vent between .
Where the rock split was the entrance to his storeroom and on the north/east side was the entrance to the room he lived in .
He carved a stairway out of the rock down to his room below! he also had shelfs in the walls! and a wood stove .
Before the county filled it in sometime around 1980, we explored the rooms many times they had great acoustics! and natural air conditioning from the vent between the rooms .
