Thames Street, in Newport, RI

Newport, Rhode Island

This famous street saw the likes of George Washington, Ben Franklin, and Captain Kidd. Cobblestones were paid for by collecting tax on slaves brought in through Newport.

For more than two hundred years it was Rhode Island's main street for sailors to get drunk, tattoed, laid, or killed.

This section was torn out in the mid 1970's, and rebuilt into malls, and condos.

My grandfather had a pharmacy on Thames near Mill Street during the WW2 period. The building stood where Trinity Park is located today. Sadly he passed while my father was young, so I never knew him, nor the family store. My dad worked there while growing up. They did photography and film developing. Though we no longer live in Rhode Island, we just recently discovered that we are descended from Roger Williams and a number of other early Rhode Island settlers.

There once was a bar named, Bucket of Blood. Thanks for the great pictures, they bring back many interesting memories.

I first set foot on Thames St on a brisk March day 1952, about 5pm. The street was deserted, except for me. It was rainy, I was in a strange town, and then, all of a sudden someone screamed 'shoot 'em'........I looked around, but there still was no one on the street but me......except for a huge wharf rat, about the size of a big cat, walking right down the middle of Thames street. Never will I forget that experience.

Great Photo!! I was stationed aboard the USS Yosemite 4/64 - 10/66. Rented an apartment at 249 1/2 Thames...just past Jamestown Ferry....it was above a Barbershop and small Lunch counter??? I parked in the ally (Blood ally) by 'Black Pearl' bar.......thanks for the memories!! Capt Harv L

Grew up in Newport in the 60's and 70's. Man, this brings back memories.

Wow this is such an outstanding shot, love the way the light reflects off of everything. I spent a lot of time growing up on Thames Street, albeit it was the early 80's. 40 years later the city is wishing they hadn't built the mall and condos and America's cup avenue. I recognize some of the buildings on the right, they are still there while some of the smaller buildings are quite different looking today. I've heard the stories about Blood Alley from my parents and I can believe them having been a sailor myself.
