I found out in June of 2010, what happened to Chief Ernest J. Gaines. He left Whiting Field in 1960 for his last duty station at SUBIC BAY. He took with him a french wife named Rene', and her son named Paul, age nine. When he died in 1985 he had another wife.

He retired and started a Boat factory and then later owned Gaines Beach, a resort not far around the bay from the navy base.

His grave is in the jungle not far from Gaines Beach. He was around sixty when he died in 1985.

This information and some 1978 photographs of Gaines are available by google searching "Gaines Beach"

He went out of his way to help me get into navy photography at the NAAS Whiting Field photolab.

As a teenager I had worked as an evening photographer for my local newspaper, so Gaines gave me a chance.
