The body language, as well as the monochromatic treatment, is what makes this image so very expressive. The knees drawn up to his chest, the hand on his head, the tilt of his head, the solemn look on his face and the fact that he is alone provide us with some information. How we interpret this information depends on what we bring to the image.

What makes this photo so expressive is the variety of personal interpretations it can offer the imagination: is he desolate? Perhaps. He also can be worried, tired, sad, lonely, thoughtful, or ill. Or perhaps none of them. He is just a kid, and kids tend to exaggerate for effect. A very thought provoking image.
