Allen Chartier writes: this is a White-crowned Sparrow. This photo is interesting because it shows the white lores and yellow bill of what is probably one of the subspecies of the "Nuttall's" group from the Pacific Northwest (since it was taken in Oregon). Our "Eastern" White-crowns have black lores and pink bills. Farther west, "Gambell's" have white lores and orange bills, and a few probably occur each year in Michigan but go unrecognized (they've been banded at Whitefish Point, I'm pretty sure). Your bird might possibly be one of the "Gambell's" since the breast is grayish rather than buffy, which is
more typical of the "Nuttall's" types.
