Jay, sorry to be late getting back to you from your question. This effect is done with a Photoshop action I created which is available for download here: http://www.shanzcan.com/galphotrt/gal_photoretouch.html
At Shan's site, scroll down to about the 20th frame. Instructions on its use are contained in the action. In there I speak of preparing the image for best results, and that's what the Aggressively Prepared image is designed to illustrate.

I am fascinated with the images you created on the
http://www.pbase.com/millau70/antique_engraving website, particularly the three street scenes of the buildings listed as, Original Image, Agressively Prepared, and Final Engraving 40 dpi. Would it be possible for you to share the techniques involved? Is there a tutorial from which I might learn this method. Thanks for any assistance.
