Flying Foxes - World's Largest Bats

The Malayan Flying Fox and the Island Flying Fox can now be seen at the Oakland Zoo in the Children's Zoo section. They are awesome!
These were ALL born in the Lubee Bat Conservancy in Florida, USA.
Malayan Flying Foxes are native to Burma, Thailand, Philippines & Malaysia.
Island Flying Foxes are native to islands from Burma to southern Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and the Maldives.

Can have a wingspan up to 6 feet (1.8 meters), and weigh up to 2.5 lbs (1000 g). They eat fruit, flowers, pollen, nectar and leaves.

unfortunately, here in the philippines, these bats are sometimes thought of as "aswang", a local version of the european vampires, but more like monsters. people hunt them and kill them. a folklore is strong here that "aswangs" eat babies in pregnant women's wombs
