Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens Test

The following images were taken at different aperture values.
They were f/1.4, f/2.0, f/2.8, f/4.0, f/5.6, f/8.0, f/11 and f/16.

Testing condition:
Film was RDPIII.
Auto-focus with same object distance.
Tripod with self-timer on. Mirror lock-up.
Hook was attached.

4000dpi with 14 bit and 16x scanning. ICE OFF.
JPEG converted from TIFF with 12 compression ratio.

Comparison is made by 100% crop of the scanned images.

Hello Jacky, I see F 4.0 as the sharpest, very interesting test, I am surprised the sharpness drops off after 5.6. Regards Carl

Strange that f/1.4 seems sharper than f/2.0 and even f/2.8 sometimes. Mine is quite soft until I get to f/2.0.

Wow, that is an interesting series. It seems that this lens has its optimum somewhere between 4.0 and 5.6. The drop in quality towards large apertures (i.e. small openings) is amazing.

Perhaps the only improvement would be the 85/1.2L USM for this shot. Reallly a great shoot and one of the best I've seen. How much and where did you get the lens?
