Japan, Beauty of Tradition - Opening exhibition in Museum of Southern Podlasie 24th April 2010

It is a distinctive aspect of the Japanese nation to harmonize
the past and the presence. Modern accomplishments of the
Japanese culture and art are strongly rooted in the tradition
of the old culture, which is noticeable in the graphics,
paintings, crafts and architecture. Another exceptional
characteristic of the Japanese is their ability to draw
inspiration from other cultures and to adapt them for
own needs, perfecting the attained skills.

The Japanese culture is amazing in the way it cherishes
the patterns and rituals preserved and passed from generation
to generation as valuable elements of the tradition.
The "Japan, Beauty of Tradition” exhibition presents
the achievements and skills of the Cherry Blossom Country
in various areas of life, exemplified by historic pieces
and many richly illustrated placards. The display includes
beautiful objects made of lacquered wood, artfully decorated
China tableware and a collection of colourful wood engravings
showing scenes from life in the old Japan. A variety of customs and rites preserved in Japan to date is depicted. The youngest visitors may learn about the customs of their coevals in the
far-away country and admire fish-shaped kites flown during those celebrations or a miniature procession of the Emperor and his courtiers. The men’s world is the world of Japanese weapons with amazing shapes and ornamentation, magnificent armours as well as the equipment of the Japanese warriors and their customs. Women may enjoy the stunning kimono dresses, embroidered or
painted with nature-mimicking patterns (flowers, plants or animals) or everyday life or ceremonial accessories (e.g. umbrellas, fans, gourds, masks, etc.). The life and customs of Japanese are depicted in the accessories and objects accompanying them in daily life and on special occasions such as the tea ceremony accessories, sake dishes, and utensils for calligraphy or fans.
A special element of the exhibition is the reconstruction of part of a traditional Japanese house with the floor covered with mats (tatami) and the fireplace (irori). The movable fusuma walls are hand-decorated with paintings. The entrance is closed with paper-covered barred doors (opening the house to the garden). Characteristic for the Japanese culture is the association with nature, where man does not aspire to the role of its sovereign but remains an organic part of it. Respect for nature and its elements is manifested in many areas of life by emphasizing natural beauty and harmony with the surroundings (e.g. in paintings or traditional architecture).

An Introduction:

Japanese culture is rich and beautiful,
however unknown on Southern Podlasie (land) East part of Poland.
We haven't an opportunity to contact with this culture.
Extremely valuable for us is their commitment to
the traditions and ceremonies associated with us.

The opening ceremony was involved youth from high school.
There was something new for these young people - Japanese aparels and ceremonies.
They had to learn how to dress kimono and known tea ceremony Chanoyu.
Gainning possible as closely as possible to show the ceremony.
In addition to the recitated of Japanese poetry and in addition of
Japanese music created the special mood.

Meetings were held with young people every weekend from
mid-March until the opening of the exhibition.
