Making mandalas

Monks are making a mandala of coloured fine sand. A mandala is a cosmic diagram that symbolizes order and harmony. They are seen as concentrated areas where the forces of the universe come together.

A sand mandala is ritualistically destroyed once it has been completed. Its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life.
