Historic Route 66 - Galena 20071030

Main Street

US Route 66, also known as The Main Street of America and The Mother Road and made famous in song, lore, and legend, was
replaced by the interstate highway system and decommissioned by the US government in 1985 and no longer officially exists.

However, much of the road is still there in many areas and its heritage and tradition are kept alive in the hearts and minds of
people by local efforts, such as this sign, one of many painted on this street in Galena, Kansas, a small town just a few miles
west of Joplin, Missouri, one of the locations mentioned in the also famous song “Route 66” or “(Get your kicks on) Route 66”.

Photographed in Galena, Kansas USA.

(GET YOUR KICKS ON) ROUTE 66
(Word & lyrics by Bobby Troup)

If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
More than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don’t forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino.

Wont you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six.

Imaginative vantage point. It also gives the flavor of a small rural town. I have lived in Ks now for 30 years and recently have been taking photos of rural areas. There is more to take photos of than I had imagined.
