South Polar Skua

Pickwick Lake; Hardin Co. TN

This interesting dark-morph bird was the hot-topic of the day. Jon Dunn was immediately taken by the resemblance of this bird to a Catharacta Skua, of which there is only 1 record of for the interior( a South Polar in North Dakota).

In this bad shot, the very broad-winged and short-tailed look is obvious, and the white primary bar is visible on the underwing, this bird also had a very noticeable bar on the upperwing. Once again, hopefully better photos will be coming.

The long thick neck, stocky body, broad wing base, broad outer half of wing, short tail, and bright white crescent at base of underside of primaries make this look like a definite skua.
