Lesser Nighthawk

Santa Ana NWR, TX

Another lifer, this male Lesser Nighthawk has been using this same roost spot for several days now, over Willow 1 pond in the woods of Santa Ana. Luckily, some very helpful birders we ran into showed us where the bird was hanging out, or I'm sure we wouldn't have seen it.

This bird was initially called a Common when it was 1st found, but concensus now seems to be with Lesser. The tail extends to the wingtips (visible, but hard to see in this shot), and the white primary bar extends beyond the end of the tertials. The rear of the bar is very straight across, with only a slight stagger. These points all point away from Common Nighthawk. There is also a small buff spot visible near the base of the primaries, also better for Lesser.
