Elepaio

Kauai, HI

This is another Hawaiian endemic, and this subspecies 'Chasiempis sandwichensis sclateri' is present only on Kaua'i. The Elapaio is a member of the Monarch Flycatcher family, and is present only in the high elevations of Kaua'i. I had them from the Pu'u Hinahina Lookout at Waimea Canyon up to the Koke'e area. They were easily found along the Pihea Trail at Koke'e, and I encountered parents attending fledglings twice. The picture posted is one of these fledglings, as I never could get an adult to stay still long enough to get a shot of. They are very feisty little birds, and the young bird shows the distinctive tail-up posture.
