If they stop to rest on their way upstream, they slip back further and knock others back with them. By this stage they are tired, beaten up, but still determined to drive ahead with their last breath. The salmon have not eaten since the Pacific ocean and they do not seem to breath well through their gills. Intermittently, they rise to the surface with their white beaks open.
