This is the real world famous Avignon Bridge...
I guess you know the song:
“ Sur le pont d’Avignon on y danse tous en rond”
Something like:
« On Avignon bridge we all dance round in a circle “
Actually the name of the bridge is Pont Saint-Bénezet, because the legend says that en 1177 an angel suggested a certain Bénezet to build a bridge exactly in that point.
They built the bridge in seven years, then they rebuilt it in 1237 and in 17th century the floods of river Rhône destroyed it in part once again and the good people of Avignon decided to leave the bridge like that, without challenging the river anymore.
So if you come to Avignon hoping to cross the Rhône walking over the famous bridge you’ll be disappointed, nevertheless, if you like, you can always dance round in a circle on the part of it that is still solid....
This photo is part of my visual diary about my trip to Avignon.
