Le nom d'Arles est aujourd'hui indissociable de celui de Van Gogh. Personne ne peut parler de la ville et de sa luminosité sans penser aux tableaux du maître. C'est la lumière qui a attiré Van Gogh dans le midi. Vincent arrive à Arles un jour de février 1888 à la recherche de la lumière du dehors et de l'illumination intérieure.
Arles is noted for the wealth of its Roman and Romanesque heritage. The monuments of the city listed as Unesco world heritage monuments in 1981 include the Roman amphitheatre (the arena), the Roman theatre, the Cryptoportico (foundations of the Roman Forum), the Roman baths of Constantine, the remains of the Roman circus, the cloister and portal of St. Trophime’s.
