She came, she saw, she conquered...

There's only been one story in the news this week, one topic of conversation wherever you go and that's
the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland. It was the first state visit by a British Monarch in a hundred years,
the first since the foundation of the Irish Republic, the first since the Peace Process.
From the moment she stepped out of the plane in an emerald green outfit, the Queen conquered the hearts
of the Irish public. She impressed them with her warmth, her stamina (after all she is an 85 year old granny),
her 'culpla focal' and most of all, by her speech at the State Banquet in Dublin Castle. And we were ever so
proud of our own President, Mary McAleese, who extended the hand of friendship to the royal visitors.
There were, of course, some protests, some scuffles and bomb scares, but the vast majority of Irish people
saw this as an important step in healing relations with our nearest neighbour.

An important gesture of apology on her part and forgiveness on your country's part. An historic event for all Europe. You presented this topic very well!V!

Excellent phoo and comment, well done. Whatever you may think about the polotics, the Queen is a remarkable lady.

Great topic for your PAD, a special moment in the history of our two countries with the apology.

What, she played conkers?

her visit to Ireland got extensive coverage here in Canada too...significant that this symbol of Empire went across the Irish Sea in friendship...and important to heal the wounds from the tumultuous past relatonship between the two countries...ironic perhaps that one of the feature writers is a man named Collins..

LOL at Phil, you can have her...only joking ;-)

What a lady, she did herself and her country proud.
Ireland did itself proud, everything went so well with the Queens visit.
As you said, she came, she saw, she sure has conquered.
Great pic Mairead.

Her visit made the news here. It is hard to not like the Queen.

About the only thing that made the headlines here - and then only in the World News pages around page 6 and the Web equivalent - were the bomb threats. Although theoretically and constitutionally Queen of Australia as well very few people really believe that she operates in that capacity or represents our interests and there isn't much attention paid to anything except the odd Royal Wedding. (And then not by everyone.) She'll be missed by many when she goes (having been at least in the background of peoples' lives for so long), but more for who she is than what she represents. But the visit is clearly important in that part of the world, and it's a good idea to "PAD" it as part of the ongoing story.

It really was a remarkable step in Europe's history and like the historical way you presented it. BV

An interesting event and such a clever way to portray it photographically.
