Est 1916

This is the sort of little shop that I would photograph if I was on
holidays. I walk past it several times a week and have been meaning
to get a pic of it to post on Pbase for quite some time but usually
there are cars parked outside. This morning I just had time to shoot
one frame before a van pulled up and parked outside the door.
A family run business it was, as the sign says, established in 1916,
the year of the Easter Rising. To the front there is a small shop
selling sweets and gifts, with a barbers to the rear. Sadly, shops
like this are fast disappearing from Irish streets and are being
replaced by generic branches of multi-nationals. Walk down the
streets of any large Irish town and city and you will see the same
stores as in the UK.

It really is a shame that these shops disappear - and as you say everywhere starts to look the same. I love the ever so slightly clashing pinks!

Charming little shops. It's a shame you can't even tell what city you're in anymore because they're all the same.

It reminds me of the village shop in ballycanu in Wexford that was also the pub called fortunes, I bet that has gone now.

I remember on one of my visits finds a Pub that was agrocers and a sweet shop. Me the wife and the kids where all delighted. Guiness, Bon Bons and a pint of milk all in one place. They do recomend that you should try and be a tourist in your own town every now and then.

The same story here too. They have been credit crunched out of business! Good shot.

It's the same here in the U.S. A very sad thing that all the old "mom & pop" shops are closing down and being replaced with chain stores. Great capture! V

We have old shops like this around. I better get snapping! Nice capture.

Our small, independent businesses have closed because the chain stores have moved in. Oh, and the same for restaurants too! I hate it. No variety.
This is a lovely little old shop. I'm glad you had your camera handy!

Very nice capture of this old shop. My family used to own two small shops in downtown Munich that were established in the 1890's by my Great-grandfather. They both closed in the 1980's as they were unable to compete with large Department Stores and most of the loyal customers had moved on or passed on.

Interesting assortment going on here: barber shop, some kind of "Girls" store all done in pink and what's with that object in the right upstairs window? Three doors - two wide open and one closed with a mesh over it...

I love old stores like these. They do give a town a certain character. It is sad to see many disappearing with the passage of time. Nice work! ~V~

A charming pair of shops!
The same thing has happened in the US. Same chain stores and restaurants can be found from coast-to-coast. No need to travel anymore since everything is the same......

I love these "time and place" shots, giving you a sense of a small piece of another place in the world. But I know what you mean about being obscured by cars; having a person walk through a shot can add to the scene, but a Ford Transit usually doesn't. I'm a bit concerned about the Girls shop on the right having a clearance sale though, I do hope that doesn't mean that there won't be any more stock...
I really like the way you've cropped this down to give the repeating pattern of rectangles that define shops like these.

These icons have been replaced everywhere...I am sick of the sameness in every shopping centre!!
I love playing tourist in the place I live...just don't have the time I wish I had to do it in!
