A Mid-Quality "Double Crimp" Tool

This is an Anchor Products Double Crimp Ratchet Tool Part No. 701030. This crimp tool is not designed, nor intended for, use on heat shrink crimp connectors. This tool is designed to be used with the three-piece insulated crimp terminal like the one you just saw above.

Insulated three-piece connectors are often sold as "marine grade" from 22ga wire to 10ga wire. This tool allows for both the wire crimp and the strain relief sleeve to be crimped, in one motion at the same time, and will not release until the full crimp has been made.

One other key feature, of a decent quality ratchet type crimper, is that you can simply re-calibrate when and if they ever go out of adjustment.

This crimp tool meets the basic requirement for a reliable crimp, in that it encloses the barrel of the crimp terminal and the action of crimping provides ALL ROUND crushing of the barrel to achieve a GAS TIGHT joint to the wire. This is of course, provided that the correct size tag is used with the correct size wire, easier for you guys in the states as these tags are designed to American wire gauge standards, (pity us Brits having to deal with European and British standard wires with American standard tags) the use of dual wall heat shrink sleeves to keep out moisture ingress from the rear of the crimp tag is an excellent scheme.

Thanks you for the great advice.
Is there any good reason to not always use double-crimp connectors for a stronger connection, and put adhesive heat shrink tubing over them if in a wet location?

Hi, and thank you for the very informative site. I'm trying to step up my game with regards to wiring, and this article has made me realize that I need to invest in a ratcheting crimper with replaceable dies. I see that there are several crimp frames on the market that look very similar to the Ancor model that you recommend but have a wider selection of dies. Ones I'm seeing include Ideal, Paladin, Pro's Kit Lunar Series, S&G Tool Aid, and even Harbor Freight. Looking at the pictures it appears that the dies are all interchangeable between all of them (and they may even be made in the same factory but rebranded) I was wondering if you had tried any of the similar but different branded crimp tools or dies and could comment on quality differences and die interchangeability?

Never mind dude. I read on and you have solved my problem! If only my crimpers came with directions to put terminal in with the rear end facing you! Happy now. Thanks.

Hi, do you have photos of the process of crimping a connector with this set of crimpers? I have the same type and If use a 'Blue' connector on the blue dot, the crimp is too loose and the wires easily pull out. I don't know if the crimper or the connector is dodgy, or my technique is not right. Thanks.

New Ancor 701030 crimpers made in Taiwan and the crimp dies have been reversed - colored dot die with smaller saddle is on top/fixed handle piece and the larger saddled die is on the lower/moveable handle piece. Crimper purchased 8/2012

I have the exact same crimper but it come from Harbor Freight tools and cost $12.I love it,it does a great job of crimping insulated and uninsulated terminals. It even has the dot in the die to leave a dot in the insulation to show that it was crimped with enough pressure to leave the dot and be said to be a certified crimp.I was just wondering if some of the dies that fit the Ancor brand would fit the Harbor Freight model.

I have one of these and it cuts the insulation on Ancor double crimp insulated connectors every time (as well as another company's, I tried both to be sure). Its brand new.

I own this anchor crimper and love it! I was at Harbor Freight, (I know,I know China junk!) and saw what appeared to be an Identical crimper on sale for 1/8 of the price of the anchor. Bought it as a back up. Side by side they look like they were made in the same factory and work equally well. Just an FYI for a boater on a tight budget.
