Pileated Woodpeckers have returned several times to this low and very convenient site for photography. The tree, at the edge of the pond, is a large cottonwood that was girdled and killed by the beavers. First pictures taken March 14. Observed excavating through March 19. Cold, wet weather happened through the 23rd and there were no observed visits by the birds. Reappeared the 25th. No shows through the 29th. Pair observed on the second tree the 30th with male hammering frequently during an hour. Efforts seem to be abandoned as of April 1.
Also, a composite of the male and female pictures has been adopted at BirdForum.net as representative for the species. BirdForum.Net Reference: PIWO
