I am now in my forties now, but i used to live on isle of sheepy, my late father lived there up to 2004. where he married and moved away. my mother and her new husband took me on the island and into sheerness, I did not reconize the place, so much has changed. but the picture above I remember all of my young life as a boy and growing up. I dont understand why places of history have to be knocked down. I have been tiold that my old shool, St Georges C of E school has been knocked down. and I have been tryingto trace students who went there and to Airdale School in Minster. I am so glad that Trevor is collecting pictures of days gone of Ilse of Sheppy, as I wojuld love to know more of this great island. not much of my family are left here. and most o fmy late fathers friends have either moved away or past away over the years. I will never forget the island and i will come back to visit. I might even make a small film about the island too. Thanks Trev for having this pictures to look at on the net. so far you seem to be the only person who has them here. Regards Tim Ward ps can anyone tell me when the Olau line stopped running?

My Dad now 93 remembers the Rio being built. He says he remembers a geat steel girder for the balcony being layed out in the road prior to its installation, because there was nowhere else to put it.
As a child I went there and it was very posh inside.
what a shame a lovely building was left to rot and be demolished.
Carol.

Although it looks pretty drab here, I remember it as a fairly classy place in it's heyday as the "best" cinema in Sheerness. It had two sets of floor to ceiling etched glass screens through which you went to get to the doors of the auditorium. The foyer was carpeted throughout in a sea green fairly thick carpet that went part way up the walls giving the place quite a sumptious feel. Originally, it had a bar and restaurant upstairs but these had become disused by my time (early '50s). Once again, Trev, you are reminding us of how much the Island has lost over the years.

I used to meet my mum from work here when the Rio was used as a factory for Thorns, making valves for tv's.
