Converted Caravan at Leysdown

Thanks to John Cooper for the picture.

"I found the attached picture of my Fathers first caravan. A converted "Charabanc" I think that's spelt right.
Purchased in about 1953. This was on "Central Beach" camp at Leysdown.
I believe the land for the site was given to Mr Davies, the site owner by the Admiralty as part of a reward for inventing the "Davies escape apparatus" for submariners.
It shows a different way of life. In those days holidays abroad were totally unheard of.
Could you imagine people today paying good money to stay in a converted bus for a holiday.
They were actually roomier and much more strongly built than caravans.
There were quite a few old coaches converted to caravans then. In later years they were compulsory scrapped to smarten up the camp sites."

other sizes: small medium original auto

Excellent site! I zoomed in on this photo because I think my parents eventually owned it. The owner of the site was my grandad William Davis, note Davis without an e. Thanks for the memories - great work!
