The Old PCT in the 1970s climbed up from Carter Meadows to Russian Lakes, and descended to this cirque. It then followed the grand South Fork of the Russian creek to the Salmon River. There, hikers picked up a reload in Sawyer's Bar, and continued north into the Marble Mtn Wilderness on their way to Canada.
