My Drenthe Heath Sheep

Here I will present photos of the very rare Dutch breed of Drenthe Heath Sheep.
This is the oldest breed in the Netherlands and the only native one where the rams as well as the ewes are horned. It goes back to the Middle Ages, but only since the 15th century they're being kept in big herds. About 30 years ago this breed almost had disappeared, due to inbreeding with other sheep breeds and some people thought the time had come to set up a preservation project. Today there are some 2500 true bred species again and slowly we're getting there, out of the danger zone, thanks to a lot of dedicated people. It's a beautiful sheep, hardened, demanding not too much care and rather selfsuporting. My flock stays out in the field Summer and Winter, the lambs are born outside and I hardly have to help them in lambing season. Most of the time they're just there when I come to look in the morning. I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do.
