Railroads: Black River Junction


The gallery title is used loosely here to describe the area between BNSF’s South Seattle Yard and the Interstate 405 bridge that spans the tracks of BNSF and UP. Technically speaking, “Black River Junction” refers to the place where a BNSF branch line diverges from its main line and runs eastward through Renton to Boeing’s Renton Plant.

Union Pacific Railroad used to have a tower at Black River Junction, but it was razed years ago. Until 1980, trains of The Milwaukee Road passed through the junction. In those days the junction was a wye, with a north leg and south leg. The latter was removed after The Milwaukee Road abandoned its western lines.

About 0.8 miles (1.3 km) southeast of Black River Junction, and immediately north of the I-405 bridge, is Control Point Tukwila, the southern end of the area in which Union Pacific’s single track crosses over BNSF two tracks.

The boundary between Renton and Tukwila runs parallel to, and just east of, the tracks.
