"I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a train." (Apologies to Joyce Kilmer.) Trains excite me because of their efficiency, massiveness, and the sense of adventure they evoke. To be close to a passing train is to approach nirvana: the sights, sounds, and vibrations are heavenly. If I have to stop at a grade crossing to wait for a train to go by, I take it not as an impediment to my perpetual motion in a car, but as another aspect of life to be savored.
