While I waded in the temporary lake on the salt flats a semi-trailer pulled up (a rare sight
on the speedway access road). The driver got out and stood by the "lake" with a laptop computer
in his arms, pointing one of those globe-shaped web cams at the scenery. He was taking
pictures to show a friend back in Massachusetts what the place looked like. With a wireless
Internet connection through his phone, he was uploading the shots into e-mail and sending
them to his friend back East. Technology in the service of geographic awareness!
After we chatted for a few minutes he drove off, headed for Sacramento. He was on a
cross-country drive, hauling goods from the East Coast to California. I returned to Wendover.
Behind the man is Tetzlaff Peak, named after "Terrible" Teddy Tetzlaff, a famous racer of the 1930s.
