Welcome to California---even if your camera dies

Oregon-California Border at US 199 view map

This photo represents disappointment on the second day of a road trip to Utah. Here, at the Oregon-California border, My camera died. Its ability to respond to my exposure settings slowly daded away. Aperture Priority mode died. Shutter Priority mode died. Manual mode died too, but took longer.

I battled this problem for about an hour, getting two or three decent exposures from the dozens I shot. This is one of the miracle exposures. Admitting defeat was difficult because it meant I would have to return home, and I had left home only two days before! Bummer.

Another type of disappointment concerned the reason for my being here. I was trying to duplicate a photo I had taken 40 years earlier. This is described in detail with another posting of this photo.

The light-colored specks on the sign's post are wads of gum.

Welcome to California; leave your gum behind. It's a little known fact that those (always closed) "agricultural" inspection stations are in fact actually looking for invasive chewing gum species.

Makes you wonder who would stop at that spot to stick gum on a sign post. Probably some ex-Catholic school students who are afraid that they will bump into some nuns who will make them kneel on uncooked rice for an hour for chewing gum. Believe me, that has happened..................or was it for shooting spitballs?

Sorry Dave, but maybe our Canons had a computer virus fatal to Nikons....

No close-up of the gum you left in 1966? That stuff has great stick-to-it-ness.

Dave, you shouldn't put your gum there...
