Cut and fill west of Othello, Washington

view map

In the distance is a railroad grade exhibiting the common engineering practice of "cut and fill": hills have been cut through and the depressions have been filled in, all to ensure as level a grade as possible. This grade used to carry trains of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific (The Milwaukee Road), which abandoned all its western trackage in 1980.

Did you see the substation near this location that served the Milwaukee when it ran with electric locomotives? One of many substations that served the MILW Coast Division, Taunton powered the line from Othello (end of the electrification) to near Doris, up the hill from Beverly, where there was another substation. There were others at Kittitas (now gone), Cle Elum (still there), Hyak (gone), Renton (still there).

MILW had others in Montana, some are still around as well.
