Car-launching pad for Thelma and Louise

Thelma and Louise Plateau, on Shafer Trail, Utah

In the movie "Thelma and Louise," the two main characters supposedly ended up at the Grand Canyon,
but the final scene was filmed here. Their car flew from left to right over the precipice at right,
where the rocks are grayish-green (White Rim Sandstone). A tribute to that scene appears here.

The shape of the sandstone "ridge" at center reminds me of Jabba the Hutt.

GClark, I don't know anything about the car and can only guess that a helicopter was used to retrieve the stunt car from a rock shelf below.

so it was a stunt; but did the stunt car really crash below or land somewhere else. Did they crash a real '66 Ford Thunderbird? and if it did go over the cliff how do they clean it up?

Nice pictures. I've spent a lot of time backpacking & jeeping in the same area. I was in a jeep with my cousin during the summer in which they filmed Thelma & Louise. We didn't know anything about the movie but were shocked to see a wooden ramp built at the edge of this mesa. They weren't filming at the time so there were no people around. We thought it was probably for some daredevil stunt.

Another time we were out there they were filming Riders of the Purple Sage, and anther time they were filiming a non-smoking PSA and had helicopters parked in this spot.

Kimberly, it would not have been possible without my Movie Location Gamma Ray Spectrometer, which I am now configuring to help me locate the site of some scenes of "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone." My laser-powered Celebrity Node Occurrence Detector was of some help too, as it tracks all the places that well-known persons go; in this case I had uploaded the "Susan Sarandon" database before heading for Utah.

Wow...how did you learn about this exact location???

Larry, your cold-heartedness is appalling. However, I agree with your assessment. The movie director's decision to severely limit the views of this spectacular scenery earns him a place at the top of the list of future "fliers."

I am glad they drove off. Neither one was a very good actress . I think more actors and actresses should drive off here.
