June 2004

Snoqualmie Pass, Washington

When I took this picture of my 1985 four-wheel-drive Subaru station wagon in 2004, it had 192,000+ miles (309,000+ km) on the odometer. It was versatile but not powerful, as it had only 70 (seventy) horsepower. The speedometer went up to 130 mph, but I rarely got it above 70 mph. Steep hills forced me to down-shift to ascend. Merging with freeway traffic was challenging.

It was a GL wagon, predecessor of the Loyale and Outback. Typical of Subarus of its era, it lost its cosmetic wheel hub covers. It required a key to lock/unlock the doors (no flashing of lights or chirping!) and manual cranking to raise or lower the windows. It had no power steering, no power windows, no air conditioning. I loved its boxy look and the fact that it had rain gutters (a convenience for roof racks) and four-wheel drive. It was so much a part of me that I was reluctant to think about getting another vehicle, even though I had sunk too much money into it for engine repairs and other things. But in 2007 I sold it and bought a new Toyota Sienna mini-van.

My personal assistant, Joe Tripod, supported my camera for this photo. He doesn’t care what kind of car I drive.

I should comment on that lovely landscape in the background, but, hey, there's a Subaru! I'm on my second one, a 2004 Outback sedan, and I love it. Your shirt matches the car nicely, by the way.

Ian, I will try to put your mind at ease. I live life "in the fast lane." This monster of a car can cruise on flat ground at 70 or 75 miles per hour, but on steep highway hills, it reaches its level of incompetence: 55 mph is typical, even if I downshift into fourth gear and press the gas pedal to the floor. The worst it has performed on a steep highway is 45 mph. So many vehicles pass me that I have required extensive psychotherapy to cope with the embarrassment. My dream is to drive this car on the Autobahn, where I would hog the passing lane, passing BMWs and Porches with abandon. I'm practicing the technique of flashing my high-beam headlights for such an occasion.

Hang on! This can't be America, where's the 25 cubic inch powerplant,3 ton station wagon. That car looks like a Nissan.

Larry, I appreciate your appreciation of my exlanation, but feel that I did an even better job with my explanation. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A very nice portrait and exlanation.

Cool ride amigo! I kept a car for twenty years and I'm still "sore" about letting it go. Here's wishing you and your chariot many safe miles of adventure!

Excellent, Dave... What are power windows, anyway? Sounds like my beloved (123K) '96 Civic. Still blowing away gleaming SUV's (at 96 horses, not underestimating the element of surprise, there...) from stoplights and getting more than twice the gas mileage.

Roslyn must be somewhere east of here?!

Nice car Dave.....But I prefer my old Chrysler-It will pass anything but a gas station.

I would have to disagree with baja_traveler about the American car. I put 348,000 miles on a 1988 Olds Delta Royale Brougham boughtr new wiht 24 miles on it, before I sold it & to my knowledge it is still running. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking your Subaru.

Hey, nice photo Dave.

Hey - almost 200,000 miles! You cant complain too much - if it was an american car it would have given up the ghost years ago...

I'd love to spend some time in the area behind you.
